“Yasmin Ahmad´s Film” launched
Malaysian film director Amir Muhammad has published a book on his colleague, the late Yasmin Ahmad. Here is a review of the book that is actually more of a report (one gets the sense that the writer has not read the book, but prefers to have it recounted by the author).
It quotes Muhammad as saying: ““What’s interesting about her films is that they may not be a biodata or about the nation, or even a docudrama, but there are many points of contact with things around us.”
While Amir does talk in detail about Yasmin’s movies, he also uses them as a starting point to take a look at what it is like being a Malaysian today.
“I don’t think this is a definitive book. Maybe a film scholar will write a different kind of book. But this is immediate, contemporary. It could not have been written at any other time. There are references to things that are very much a snapshot of how it is like to be in Malaysia now,” said Amir.”
