More on Mendoza and Cannes

May 26, 2009

The fact that Brillante Mendoza has won the Golden Palm in Cannes somehow dawned only slowly on the Philippine public. But now they are already talking about giving the director a “hero´s welcome” similar to that of Pinoy boxing champing Manny Pacquiao alias “Pacman The Destroyer”.

The  Inquirer has a long story with reactions from the local film community. Jessica Zafra mediates on the comparison of Mendoza´s Cannes entry Kinatay with Brown Bunny as the worst Cannes film ever by American critic Rogert Ebert.

The most introguing read, however, is the debate in the comments section of Ebert´s blog, apparently a venerable meeting place of whackos with too much time on their hands to write endless rants on an Argentine horror film that they did not finish watching, the Violence Code of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’, the fact that life is short and fleeting and on Cannibal Holocaust.

Start reading here for an interesting look into the collective Filipino psyche.

PS: Actress Mirabel Lopez feels “vindicated” by the Golden Palm after the unjust treatment she felt she got at a recent beauty pageant in Manila.Unfortunately, the nature of the unjust treatment is not discussed…
